SHRADDHA strives for a paradigm shift to development
“ଅନ୍ଧାର ବୋଲି କର ନାହିଁ ଗୋଳ,
ଦୀପ ଟିଏ ଦିଅ ଜାଳି,
ଜଳିବ ତହିଁରୁ ସହସ୍ର ଦିପାକି,
ଅନ୍ଧକାର ଯିବ ଚାଲି।“
“If there is darkness around,
mere shouting or criticizing is not going to help,
Instead, let each one of us light a Diya (candle), and
from one candle, a thousand will glow and
the darkness will go away.”
One of the inspiring episodes described in the epic “The Ramayana” relates to the contribution of the tiny squirrels to making of the mighty ‘sethu’ (bridge) across the sea for reaching Lanka. Being inspired by its noble purpose, the squirrels decided to support the cause by getting wet in the seawater, rolling over the sand, and then shaking off the sand on the sethu. Lord Rama was highly impressed by this effort of the squirrels done with utmost sincerity and commitment, though small in magnitude, and fondly patted them on their back. According to the epic, noble deeds of the squirrel got them rewarded with the stripes which it is carrying on its back for ages.
Drawing inspirations from this episode, SHRADDHA seeks to address the gigantic task of socio-economic empowerment of the handloom weavers with dedication and perseverance notwithstanding its limitation of resources. SHRADDHA welcomes managerial and financial support from all the stakeholders viz, the consumers, the Government, the media, and the civil society in its effort for promotion of handloom and increasing the earnings of the weavers substantially for making the development inclusive and sustainable.
(Conceptualized by Dr S K Panda, founder of SHRADDHA)
SHRADDHA stands committed to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030
Empowering the handloom weavers with skill and technology for accessing the market with a quality handmade product, as per the taste of the customers
which will increase their earning substantially and in turn lead to better health and education, empowerment of women, and conservation of environment.
- This will mean contributing to achievement of the following SDG 2030 in particular
- No Poverty (Goal no 1) – through increase in income and reduction of poverty
- No Hunger (Goal no 2) – through increase in income and access to nutrition and food
- Health & Wellbeing (Goal no 3) – through access to better public health care
- Quality Education (Goal no 4) – through access to better pre-school and school education
- Gender equity (Goal no 5) – through enhancing the earning and prestige of the women in the family and society
- Climate action (Goal no 13) – By checking rural to urban migration, afforestation and conservation of forest

Making One plus One Eleven

“Working in a multidisciplinary team with Positive attitude and appropriate technology make the changes transformational(radical)”
(This is like an ugly caterpillar hibernating and transforming itself into a beautiful butterfly piercing out of the cocoon)
(Idea conceived by Dr Sanjay Kumar Panda in his book with the title)
For my graduation and post-graduation in chemistry, I had conducted several experiments with chemical reagents. Working in government in various capacities gave me a similar opportunity of experimenting and managing changes for meeting the expectations of the people. I, along with other colleagues, worked on the hypothesis for maximizing benefit to the people within the existing resources and constraints.
The hypothesis proposes that “positive mindset and attitude” along with “working in a team” and “use of appropriate technology” can increase the result by manifold, which gives the title of the book. This compilation is like a garland of sixteen flowers (chapters) stitched together with hypothesis as the common thread, as a humble offering to the people.
Satyagopal I have been requesting the members of this group to adopt Odisha handloom Sambalpuri or any other kind to be worn all times by them except perhaps in office and in court. This will give a big boost to. our weavers. Afterall what they need is money for their products.
Thanks a lot for your valuable suggestions on marketing, which is one of the most important issues in promotion of handloom- this group is trying to understand and address.
There is a good demand for handloom products. However, this is required to be buttressed with new design, colour and product on a continuous basis as per the changing taste of the customers.
The major challenge is to change the weavers, making them understand and provide incentives for weaving a new product in place of traditional saree.
This requires two things (i) assured buy back arrangement and (ii) working capital.
In SHRADDHA, we have a great opportunity with the sanction of a small project by NABARD under LEDP.
We shall have to work hard through Surendra, Bani, Santosh with help of Shri Bijan and Vikash for developing a production base with 90 weavers to be covered under project.
I would request Satyagopal, Binayak, Ira, Bharati Nani, itishree, kshirod and other friends to come forward and support group of five weavers (total 18) each to produce a new fabric with a new design, which will be brought back us to be processed and sold at our own effort.
The weaver concerned will be paid a suitable wage to be decided by Surendra and team। I shall also adopt a group myself.
I feel esteemed members of the group will find it a very fascinating and meaningful experience of creativity and giving back to me society – a purpose all of us are passionately pursuing.
SHRADDHA strives for a paradigm shift to development
from “Charity” to “Empowerment”

- Man is a social animal and just as a fish cannot leave outside water, no human being can leave outside the society.
- In the society, the rich with financial and managerial resources need to help the poor (disadvantaged) with counselling and financial resource.
- This is necessary for making the development inclusive and sustainable.
- Often the rich feels that their responsibility is over by giving one time donation which is known as cheque book philanthropy. However, such approach develop a dependency syndrome and is not sustainable.
- A better and correct approach is to provide counselling, handholding, skill along with financial resource, for making the process sustainable.
- This empowerment-based approach form the core of SHRADDHA’s approach to development of handloom.
- In the picture –
- on the left side, a rich man (inside the car) is thinking his job is over dropping a coin on the hand of a physically challenged girl reflecting the charity-based mindset and approach, whereas
- on the right side, a tribal woman has been empowered with education and skill to run heavy earth moving vehicles, by TATA steel under their TEJASWINI imitative.
