- A soft spoken, amicable person, started his social and political career as a young student leader.

worthy son of late Padmashree Dr. Krutartha Achartya, a legendary figure in the field of social service, handloom and co-operative movement of Odisha.

Became the first President of Odisha State Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the youth front of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

While studying law, was inspired by the Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Narayan movement and opposed declaration of Emergency, was arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and remained in custody for over a year.

After completing study of law, started his political career and headed the Youth Front of the then Janata Party (JP) in 1977.

Elected as a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Bargarh Assembly Constituency in 1990.

Joined the cabinet headed by Shri Biju Pattnaik as the Minister and dealt with the charge of Textile and Handloom, Food & Civil Supplies, Excise, Rural Development departments. was re-elected to Assembly from the same Constituency in 1995 and was elected as the Secretary of the Janata Dal Legislature Party.

Played an important role in formation of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), after the demise of Shri Biju Patnaik.

Elected to the Lok Sabha from Sambalpur Parliamentary Constituency in 1998 and for three consecutive terms.

Worked as the Chairman of the MPLAD Committee of Lok Sabha, Member of the Standing Committee of Parliament on Tourism & Culture, Energy, Railways, Steel & Mines and Ministry of Surface & Road Transport.

Represented India in the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2007 and travelled abroad extensively.

In 2009 elected to the Odisha Assembly from Rairakhol Assembly Constituency.

Worked as Cabinet Minister (2009- 2014) in charge of Health & Family Welfare, Finance and Public Enterprises, Public Grievances & Pension departments.

Elected to Rajya Sabha in 2016 from Odisha and worked in Parliamentary Standing Committee, Consultative Committee and Chairman of the Petition Committee.

Actively involved in public life as the State Senior Vice-President of Biju Janata Dal. Travelled extensively within the country and abroad in number of countries.

Has been associated with Journalism in publication of “The Moon Light” fortnightly in English and “Ratna Bhoomi” weekly in Odia and as the President of Bargarh District Journalists Association.

Started his career in the Operation Flood Dairy movement, as a close associate of Dr Vergese Kurian.
Justice A K Patnaik was elevated as a Judge of High Court of Orissa in January 1994 and was immediately transferred to Gauhati High Court in February 1994. After a tenure of eight years as a Judge of Gauhati High Court, he was transferred back to the Orissa High Court in April 2002. After a stint of about three years as a Judge of Orissa High Court, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Chhatisgarh High Court and thereafter was transferred as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court in October 2005. In November 2009, he was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court and he retired from the Supreme Court in June 2014.
Presently, Justice Patnaik is busy as an Arbitrator in domestic and international arbitrations in India and abroad. He is also giving legal opinions to Government Agencies, Public Sector Organisations and Private Corporate Houses in different fields of law.
Justice Patnaik is presently also working as the Oversight Authority appointed by the Supreme Court to ensure proper utilisation of funds collected as penalty for unauthorised mining in Odisha for providing piped drinking water to every tribal house, education and livelihood to the tribal children and health facilities in the mining districts of Odisha. As Handloom and Handicrafts are sources of livelihood in the tribal and rural areas, Justice Patnaik has developed interest in Handlooms and Handicrafts and has become member of ‘SHRADDHA’.
