Peculiarity of this category lies in its weaving technique – “Tie & dye” (resist dyeing ) or Ikat or Bandh.
Design desired on the fabrics is first selected, covering all aspects, like type, motifs – size and shape, colour combinations etc.
Selected design is drawn on the graph paper.
Yarn, either silk or cotton, is processed.
Required number of threads of yarn is tied tightly with thread/ rubber at selected places, matching with the design on graph.
Yarn so tied yarn is then dyed in the desired dye matching with the design.
After the dyeing the yarn is washed with water.
Depending on the design, the yarn is untied, and again then tieing and dyeing process is repeated up to three tomes in different shades colours starting from lighter to darker shades.
After the process is complete, it is washed and dried and then taken to the loom for weaving.
If the tied and dye is on the yarn used for weaving as warp, it is called warp ikat, if it is on weft it is called weft ikat and if it is on both warp and weft, the fabrics is called double ikat.
The fabrics is either silk or cotton, or both cotton and silk (Bapta) depending on the yarn used for weaving
Motifs used are plants and animals animals, drawn from nature, like lion, elephant, creepers
